Granite
Granite, formed in the earth’s molten mantle at exceedingly high temperatures, is an extremely hard natural product that resists almost any kind of damage. The gloss on polished natural granite will hold its high polish indefinitely. Knives, cutlery or pots and pans leave no scratches, gouges or mar the finish. Even extreme heat will have no affect on natural granites polish; which makes it an ideal kitchen countertop choice.
Some of the advantages of using Granite and natural stone over synthetics such as porcelain, ceramic tile and formica are:
• Granite is indestructible
• Long lasting
• Fantastic color choices
• Affordable, especially when considering the length of time it lasts
Granite Countertops and Flooring
When purchasing granite for countertops, they are usually ¾ inch (2 cm) or 1 ¼ inches (3 cm). Most dealers recommend the heavier thickness for improved and lasting durability and strength. When laminating the edges, the thickness will double. If there are finished edges, the overhang should be 1 ½ (3.8 cm) to 2 inches (5 cm).
We recommend to seal all natural granite counter tops when they are installed and then again on an annual basis. When installing granite around cook tops and other cutouts, it may require a seam. By caulking and matching the seams to the counter top, this will minimize the line. Buyers can very often look at different ‘lots’ of granite and choose the lot that appeals to them. This is because as with any natural product, the color and pattern of the stone varies.
The absolute beauty of a natural granite floor will compliment any kitchen from country to cosmopolitan chic. Whether you are building a new kitchen or remodeling an old one, it adds character and warmth to the room. Granite comes in a multitude of colors, but the beige and brown tone families are still one of the most popular colors. They look wonderful with most wall colors and offer a lot of flexibility. Granite patterns all differ slightly so no two natural granite floors are identical.
Many people that have dark kitchen cabinets will choose lighter colored stones to warm up the room and make the kitchen appear larger. Because of its beauty, elegance and durability, granite is a wonderful choice for flooring and countertops.
Installing granite countertops or floors is not a do-it-yourself project. Always hire a trained professional to handle and install the granite. Not only does it require special equipment, the weight alone is extremely heavy and can be dangerous to handle alone or with an inexperienced team. Safe handling is extremely important, as even a small error can be costly.
