8 Ways to Make Your Bathroom Eco-Friendly

Taking on a bathroom remodel can be an expensive but rewarding task. Installing new fixtures, flooring, and lighting give your bathroom new beauty and dimensions you never knew it was capable of having. So, while you are in the process of your bathroom remodel, you may want to consider making your bathroom eco-friendly at the same time. Not only will these upgrades add to the aesthetics of your bathroom, but they will also help you to save money and the environment at the same time.

Toilets – Toilets in older homes can consume up to three and a half gallons of water each day. While choosing a new toilet for your bathroom, look for options that generate more water efficiency. Newer toilets can reduce the amount of water used by half or more. This is an excellent upgrade that saves money on the water bill, but also conserves water through the terrible drought Southern California is experiencing.

Faucets – There are hundreds of faucets available. One way to narrow down the search is by looking at those that are labeled WaterSense. These faucets can decrease water consumption by 30% and, in turn, save money on utility bills.

Showers/Bathtubs – There are two things to consider when buying a new shower or bathtub: 1. Install a shower head that has the WaterSense label. It uses about half the amount of water per minute compared to a traditional shower head. Often, these are called low flow shower heads. 2. If you are replacing the shower or bathtub, purchase one that is made from reusable or sustainable materials to avoid filling up landfills later on.

Cabinetry – Shop around for cabinets made from natural, organic materials and that are free of harmful, pollution causing chemicals.

Countertops – One of the easiest ways to make your bathroom greener is to purchase a countertop made from recycled materials. These countertops often are made to look like glass, granite, or stone so that you do not have to sacrifice the look you desire for the green products you stand behind.

Lighting – Once you have installed your beautiful new light fixtures, purchase LED light bulbs for them. They use significantly less energy than fluorescent bulbs and still shine just as bright.

Flooring – There are many options for sustainable flooring, including certain hardwoods, cork, and fast-growing bamboo. You can also consider recycled materials like used tiles or reclaimed wood. In addition to the material, you will also want to make sure it is installed without the use of harmful chemicals.

Reduce your water and energy consumption – In addition to the actual hardware and fixtures in your bathroom, change the way you use water and energy to maximize your bathroom’s efficiency and your impact on the environment. Remodeling doesn’t just have to be about aesthetics. It’s also a great opportunity to infuse sustainable features into the home. Call Signature Design Center today to chat about turning your bathroom remodel into an eco-friendly success!
